Today at the library they had the annual book sale. I found a few chapter books for Luke. One is called Red, White and Blue and is the story of how the American flag became a reality. It's kind of an American History primer. At one point it covers the whole Confederate/Civil War portion. It didn't say why there was a secession or the reason for the war but of course my curious future lawyer son (he can argue and catch you on technicalities like a legal eagle), asks me. So I explained the disagreement about slavery. This must have jogged his memory because then he started filling me in on the details of how Lincoln freed the slaves and stood up for them. He was visible shaking with emotion as he told me that they had an "auction" (he meant election) at his school for the "best president" and that "a lot of people voted for Washington because he was the first president and he won, but I voted for Lincoln because he was the nicest!" He was quite disturbed that his fellow school mates didn't value the "niceness" as he did. And he clearly wasn't impressed by anyone just being the "first." I just love this. Having these discussions with him just thrills me beyond any ability to explain.
